The song has an interesting history that you may read about here. A possible interpretation is that Lady Green Sleeves was a promiscuous young woman, and even finds a mention in a translation of The Canterbury Tales.
The song was associated with Christmas as early as 1686, and one of the most popular set of lyrics associated with it is William Chatterton Dix’s What Child Is This.
